Designing Our Ideal Day to Achieve Greater Success

February 28, 2022 By EMI

This is a guest post by Peter C. Atherton, P.E.

ideal dayThe number one reason most often expressed to me in strategic planning and team development work for not taking advantage of new opportunities is a “lack of time.”

A lack of time (and inability to effectively manage time) is not only holding many of us back from taking advantage of new opportunities, it’s hurting us individually and organizationally.

Managing our time and energy has — and always will — be critical to our success in almost all aspects of our lives. If we want to lead ourselves and others forward, especially today, we need to proactively “change the game” and establish a new model for better time management.

We have the power right now to better manage our time, and as leaders and managers, a “lack of time” can no longer be an excuse for not doing what needs to be done or not investing in what needs to be invested in, because:

  1. We all have the same 24 hours in a day, and we make time for what we value or what we are “valuing.”
  2. In the eyes of top talent and clients, constantly being busy and consumed is not a “badge of honor.” In fact, it’s become a “red flag.”
  3. Asking ourselves and most others to just put in more time is untenable.

So, how can you begin to solve the “lack of time” problem? Learning how to design your ideal day and then aligning it with others is a great place to start. I recommend five key steps in designing your ideal day.

How to Succeed with Your Strategic Plans and Initiatives

December 9, 2021 By EMI

This is a guest post by Peter C. Atherton, P.E.

There’s no question that strategic planning is essential for individual, team, and organizational success. Yet despite this, the vast majority of strategic plans and major strategic initiatives fail or fail to be fully or successfully implemented.

Why is this the case and, more importantly, what can we do to ensure that we, our teams, and our organizations are on the winning side?

strategic planning
From my perspective as both a strategic planning participant at manager, principal, and firm owner levels and now as a strategic planning facilitator and execution consultant, here are the top 10 reasons most strategic plans and major strategic initiatives either languish or fail:

Who Will Win the Talent Standoff?

May 3, 2021 By EMI

This is a guest blog by Peter C. Atherton, P.E. that was previously posted here.

TalentPlaying to win requires a real investment in organizational redesign, along with the creation of both a vision and a culture that are worth the work.

The Standoff

The standoff is between younger talents’ needs and older talents’ interest and ability to engage and develop them. It’s the future versus a non-functional or sustainable status quo.

To succeed, we need to reimagine work in the context of today’s actual constraints and the reality of a forever-changed world.

The Problem

Organizationally, too many of us are in the functional shape of an hourglass.

We have little “middle,” and what we do have continues to be overloaded and piling up with pressure moving upward instead of downward in the organization where more capacity exists.

How “Grow” Became a Four-Letter Word

March 22, 2021 By Angelique Burns

This is a guest blog by Peter C. Atherton, P.E.

Grow“Grow just means more work for me and more rewards for you.”

That’s an increasing lament from practitioners to principals across our industry.

What went wrong and, more importantly, how can we fix this?

There are many great reasons to grow as an organization.

Here Are Four Reasons I Think Most People Can Get Behind on Our Teams and in Our Firms:

Engaging the Engagers: Succeeding in the New Era with Better Leadership and Management

November 9, 2020 By EMI

This is a guest blog by Peter C. Atherton, P.E.

Better Leadership

“Literally nothing a CEO or CHRO does will authentically, structurally, and sustainably change the value of your organization more.”

This is a statement from the recently released book written by Jim Clifton, Chairman and CEO of Gallup, and Jim Harter, PhD, Chief Workplace Scientist for Gallup, based on their research and more than 30 years of data, to help workplaces thrive and produce something the whole world wants through better leadership and management.

What they are referencing is “improving your ratio of great to lousy managers”.  The key to this, however, rests solely with leaders.

It’s Both

To succeed today in any position of authority we need to both lead and manage.

Leadership is a role to establish a clear vision for a mission that inspires others to follow and then enable achievement through times of both conflict and harmony.
