In our 100th episode, we share with you a response from Executive Director Joe Schroedel about credentials and certifications during the Society of American Military Engineer’s Student Leader Workshop in North Carolina.

Engineering Success quotes:

engineering career

Here are the key points:

  • A person who produces results and who knows what he’s doing is more valuable in the company and is going to move up in the organization.
  • Never stop learning.
  • Know yourself – know your strengths and weaknesses are.
  • There are other things you can do to develop yourself and to learn that has nothing to do with degrees and certifications.
  • Think about what you like to do so much that when you’re doing it you lose track of time.
  • Get your priorities straight and know what you like to focus on. Do what you want to do and it won’t be like work.

More details on these in the episode…

In the Take Action Today segment of the show, I give you something to think about in your engineering career and life.

About Joe Schroedel, P.E., F.SAME

Joe is the Executive Director for the Society of American Military Engineers. He has an extensive military and private sector leadership experience and continues to provide inspirational and motivational insights to engineers.

Among Joe’s assignments with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), he served as Commanding General, USACE South Atlantic Division where he led a 5,000 person workforce in the management and execution of a $4 billion military and civil works engineering, construction and environmental program. Before that, as Commanding General, USACE South Pacific Division, he oversaw a $3 billion military and civil works program across 10 western states.

He previously led an Executive Leadership Team for Water Infrastructure at global consulting, engineering and program management firm Parsons Brinckerhoff, which he joined in 2009 after a 34-year career with the U.S. Army. He also recently served as an Adjunct Professor in the Graduate Construction Management Program at George Mason University.
