Here Are Some of the Questions I Asked Elizabeth:

  • What does a typical workday look like for you, and what parts of your job do you enjoy most or least?
  • What are the main differences between design-bid-build and design-build project delivery methods, and how do they affect project outcomes?
  • How important are technical skills in construction management, and what impact do they have on a project’s success?
  • What soft skills in engineering do you think are most valuable in construction, especially for women in the industry?
  • How have mentoring and networking organizations influenced your career, and what advice would you give to those wanting to become mentors?
  • How can leaders in technical fields build a culture that encourages open communication and stronger dialogue among teams?
  • What final advice would you give to women engineers who are considering a career in construction management?

Here Are Some Key Points Discussed in This Episode About What Women in Construction Management Can Do to Unlock Real Growth:

  • Construction managers juggle a wide range of tasks each day, from site visits to client meetings. The variety keeps the role dynamic, especially when it includes mentoring others and tackling big-picture project decisions.
  • Design-build allows for faster delivery and clearer outcomes but means the owner gives up more control. Design-bid-build offers flexibility, though it can lead to different interpretations and extended timelines, particularly in the public sector.
  • A solid grasp of drawings, schedules, and codes is essential to keeping construction projects on track. Even without deep technical expertise, knowing when to ask questions and how to coordinate with engineers makes a major difference.
  • Soft skills like empathy, trust-building, and clear communication play a critical role in successful project delivery. Women in construction management often bring emotional intelligence that strengthens collaboration and enhances client relationships.
  • Getting involved in industry organizations early helps professionals build strong networks and uncover the right career opportunities. These communities provide mentorship, leadership guidance, and a sense of shared experience.
  • Communication in construction projects must be clear and intentional. Strong documentation and messaging keep teams aligned and prevent miscommunication.
  • A career in construction management offers a fulfilling and engaging path for those who come prepared and take initiative. Respect and confidence grow through attention to detail, consistent effort, and becoming the person others rely on.
