Winning With Impact: How to Stand Out in the Workplace, Marketplace, and Recruiting Space

August 24, 2020 By EMI

This is a guest blog by Peter C. Atherton, P.E.

ImpactWhether newer to the workforce or with 20 or more years’ experience, so many of us are:

  1. Feeling the weight of burnout and disengagement,
  2. Yearning for more meaning and purpose, and
  3. Wanting to make a difference in solving issues facing our world and those we care about.

Organizationally, many of us are also struggling to attract and retain inspired talent, clients, vendors, and partners to help us grow and be sustained.

There are many factors that lead to these circumstances, but when the prolonged work overload is finally addressed and the workflow improved, how do we better engage?

After we have “mastered our craft” and “made a name” for ourselves, how do we find greater meaning and purpose — and make a difference beyond the office and our immediate families?

Even as we build our careers, how can we leverage what we know to have a bigger impact and to improve our communities and the lives of others?

How to Support Women in Your Workplace

April 13, 2020 By EMI

This is a guest blog by Holly Welles

Support WomenIn the engineering industry, only 13% of professionals are women. Moreover, only 30% of women who earned a bachelor’s in engineering remain in the field for more than 20 years. Often, workplace culture, a lack of appreciation for their skills, and gender discrimination, in general, drive them away from the industry. This is a detriment to the engineering world as the industry’s workplace diversity dwindles. In addition, it negatively impacts female engineers.

Engineering is a swiftly growing industry that promises excellent pay, good benefits, and the chance to make a difference in the world. From green building to virtual reality, the industry continues to shift and transform with technology. Women deserve as much of a chance to establish a fulfilling career in this exciting field. However, if female engineers are to persist in their field, they need the support of their employers and coworkers. Here is how you can support women in your workplace:

6 Must-Have Skills to Make You Marketable in Any Workplace

September 6, 2017 By EMI

This is a guest blog post by Carol Evenson

Must-Have SkillsAs industries continue to evolve to accommodate the changing needs and demands of society, the skills being head-hunted by human resources and talent managers are also changing. And considering that job markets are becoming increasingly saturated, it can pay off to learn and master specific skills. Honing these six must-have skills will not only make you more marketable but also help broaden your career horizon.

Time Management

The ability to manage your time and energy equates to a higher degree of efficiency and productivity in the workplace, skills that any company will want to bring into their organization. Of course, it can be tricky to gauge how effective you are with managing your time and even more difficult to show it to your interviewers. Keeping a journal that tracks your daily tasks, showing up on time for your interviews, and choosing your questions during the interview are good ways to show that you are all about time management and that you can prioritize your energy and time on tasks that matter.
