โI hate sales!โ โI could never sell anything!โ I wish I had a dimeโmaybe a dollarโfor every time I uttered phrases like that.ย ย
My first business coach helped me break that thought pattern. Here is how the thinking goes:ย ย
- You are an engineer who excels at (fill in the blank).ย
- You happen to meet Chris, whose company does (fill in the blank).ย
- Chris mentions that he/she really needs help filling a clientโs request for (what you provide).ย
- Upon hearing that, you say, โI/we can help you with that.โย
- Chris says, โIโd like to learn more. Call me.โย
Did you sell anything? No.ย
Did you tell Chris you could help with the problem? Yes.ย ย
Did you have to take Chris down some long sales conversation to get his/her interest? No.ย
Will you close the deal? The likelihood is high.ย ย
Change Your Thinkingย
Selling isnโt about selling in that icky, slimy way that you have perceived it. Selling is about you providing a friend/client/stranger with a solution to the problem theyโre trying to address. In return for your help, you get paid.ย ย
If youโre still on the fence, ask yourself who you pay to provide a needed service to you. Your yardย people? Your mechanic? Your babysitter?ย ย
I love this quote from author and psychologist Wayne Dyer: โWhen you change the way you think about things, the things you think about change.โย
Change how you think about selling. Build relationships instead.ย ย

People Buy Based on Emotions, Not Logicย
I have had interesting conversations with some very logic-minded engineers over the years. They tell me customers buy from them because of:ย ย
- Their technical expertise: โWeโre the bestโย
- Their experience: โ25 years in businessโย
- Price point: Underbid the competitionย
The truth is, people buy from you because they:ย
- Like you, as Anna saidย
- Believe you truly understand their needs, as Doug saidย
- Have a relationship with youย
