Hate your Job? Take Action Today to Change your Situation!

October 16, 2017 By EMI

What to do when you hate your job…don’t delay, take action today….

Q: What can you do when you hate your job?

Welcome to episode #31 of Engineering Career TV. The theme for today’s episode is: Hate your Job? – Take Action Today.

I spend almost all of the Engineering Career TV episodes answering questions that have been submitted from engineers around the world.  The questions are typically focused on professional development for engineering professionals, especially relevant to practicing engineers.

You can submit questions for the show by clicking here.

Let’s jump into today’s topic: Hate your Job? – Take Action Today. This topic is based on a question from Arthur, who asks the following:

Q: How do I know when to leave the company I am working for if they have put me in a position I am not interested staying in or learning about?  Also, how do I choose between a big company or a small company?

A:  The full answer can be seen in the Engineering Career TV video above, but here are a few of the main points:

  • The easy answer is to go to that company and tell them that you are not happy in your position and that you would like to do something different.
  • Think about the consequences of talking to them, and obviously don’t blatantly tell them that you hate your job.
  • If you cannot afford to lose your job right now, then what you need to try and do is show them without telling them that you are better at something else.
  • Stay calm, decide on what your risk tolerance is and then take the proper course of action.
