In this episode, we talk to Jared M. Green, PE, D. GE, NOMA, who is the host of one of EMI’s other podcasts, The Geotechnical Engineering Podcast. Jared is also a Vice-President at Langan Engineering, and in this episode, he is going to tell us what he thinks a structural engineer needs to know about a geotechnical engineer.

Engineering Quotes:

Here Are Some of the Questions We Ask Jared:

  • What do geotechnical engineers do, and in your opinion how does that differ from what structural engineers do?
  • If a civil engineer asks you what field you think he or she should specialize in, choosing between a geotechnical and structural engineer, what advice might you offer about each?
  • How feasible do you think is it to get a B.S. in one field and then a Masters in the other?
  • How important is it to get a geotechnical master’s degree?
  • Share with us one secret/tip that you think structural engineers may not know about geotechnical engineering?
  • How can structural engineers become more involved, or work more closely with geotechnical engineers?
  • In your opinion, what can we expect of geotechnical engineering in the future?

Here Are Some of the Key Points Discussed About What a Geotechnical Engineer Thinks a Structural Engineer Needs to Know:

Are you Focused on Moving your Engineering Career Forward, Every Day?

Engineering Career ForwardOdds are if you’re like most engineers, you show up at work each day, solve problems, go home, and then come back the next day and repeat that process.  Obviously, I am simplifying things here.  Within that, ‘solve problems’ generalization, lie thousands of amazing projects, inventions, and solutions that move our world forward.  Engineers create extraordinary things. But what career-related items do you partake in outside of your engineering projects, and how you do you decide when or why to execute them and move your engineering career forward?

In this session of The Engineering Career Coach Podcast, I give a young engineer some guidance on concerns she has, including lack of engineering-design experience and which master’s degree is best to pursue.

While much of my content on this site focuses on the development of core or nontechnical skills, getting the proper technical and engineering-design experience is also important as an engineer, especially when you are starting your career. Unfortunately, many engineers get trapped in a job in which, for whatever reason, they are not getting this experience. This session offers engineers with this dilemma some strategies for overcoming it.

“A little more persistence, a little more effort, and what seemed hopeless failure may turn to glorious success.” – Elbert Hubbard

engineering-design experienceThe career-changing tip at the end of the show will not only challenge you to take action in your career but will force you to do it in a big way.
