Compilation

In this episode, we have published a special compilation episode which consists of clips from some of our past episodes related to our career elevator advice question. This question gets asked at the end of each episode and goes as follows: “If you got into an elevator with a civil engineer and had about 30 to 40 seconds with him or her and had to give him or her career advice in that short period of time, what would it be?”  We are so grateful for the support of our listeners and excited to share this milestone 100th episode with you!

Engineering Quote:

Here is a summary of the elevator advice from our guests in this compilation episode:

Episode 3, Paul Eng-Wong

“You need to build a network of people, locally, nationally or internationally depending on the meeting you go to. It’s also important for civil engineers to develop their technical skills.” (click to tweet)

Episode 6, Rob D’Onofrio, P.E., CEng

“There is no secret to success other than hard work. Do not get discouraged in your career and find a way to work through difficult times.”(click to tweet)

Episode 10, Shana Carroll, PE, LEED AP BD+C

“Do what you love doing, be somewhere where you feel challenged on a daily basis and continue learning new things. Be yourself, as people work with people they like. If you’re not showing your real self, you are not giving yourself enough credit.” (click to tweet)

Episode 11Kathy Schneider

“Look for new opportunities and don’t be scared to take them. Don’t play it safe all the time, because there is a lot to learn out there.” (click to tweet)

Episode 13, Will Schnier, P.E.

“Learn to communicate effectively as effective communication is the number one thing you have to advance in your career.  Don’t think you know it all, be a sponge for new information. If you’re not comfortable in your current job, find a way to change that situation. Life is short, don’t waste your time thinking it is going to get better. Actively try to make things better and be in control of your own destiny.” (click to tweet)

Episode 17, Norma Jean Mattei, Ph.D., PE, F.SEI, M.COPRI, M.ASCE

“Those who are in leadership positions should look around tap someone on their shoulder and ask them how they can get involved in their associations. Those who are looking for a leadership position should simply say yes or just show up.” (click to tweet)

Episode 20, Amanda Payne

“Getting to know people is extremely important in your career. Who you know is very critical to where you can go in your life. So, build relationships, because those relationships are going to last.” (click to tweet)

Episode 36, Rick De La Guardia

“Learn to develop an entrepreneurial mindset as this is a way of life and thinking. You must constantly grow and should never stop learning. Learn to invest and manage your money well and learn to network well.” (click to tweet)

Episode 40, John M. Lowe, PE

“Sharpening your written communication skills is probably one of the most undervalued and overlooked skills that are critically needed by civil engineers. Find someone in your organization and ask them to be your mentor in the area of written communication.” (click to tweet)

Episode 56, Sabrina Rivera, P.E.

“Take every opportunity that is presented to you and do not be afraid to talk to your senior manager. Don’t be intimidated by people. Everyone you work with is really looking out for your best interest.” (click to tweet)

Episode 69, Daniel Loscalzo PE LEED AP

“Work really hard on your public speaking skills because this is often an overlooked skill, but is needed often in your career.” (click to tweet)

Episode 70, David Gockel, PE, PP, LEED AP

“Work really, really hard and be authentic. Be yourself and don’t try to be somebody that you are not. When you do these two things, opportunities and success will come your way.” (click to tweet)

Episode 82, Alexis Clark, E.I.T

“Don’t close your mind to anything. Put your pride and stubbornness aside and expect something that is outside of what you have expected for yourself.” (click to tweet)

Episode 92, Ihsan Al-Fayyomi

“Follow your passion and your passion will lead you to where you want to be. Don’t do things for money, do what you love, and money will follow.” (click to tweet)
